Report: Dozens killed in mosque bombing

At least 120 people were killed and 270 others wounded on Friday when two suicide bombers blew themselves up and gunmen opened fire on a Muslim congregation at Friday prayers in the central mosque in northern Nigeria's largest city of Kano, a rescue official said.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the toll could rise, as some of the wounded were in critical condition and may not survive.
A third bomb exploded outside the mosque among a crowd of worshipers.
The attacks come two weeks after the emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, one of Nigeria's most influential monarchs, called for self-defense, urging people to procure arms and fight Islamist militant group Boko Haram‎, which has a significant presence in the area.
The emir made the call at the same mosque where Friday's attack occurred.
Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Boko Haram is the main suspect. Many believe the attacks were reprisals for the emir's call to arms against the terror group.
A CNN reporter at the morgue of the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital -- one of two hospitals treating victims of the attacks -- counted 94 bodies and was told by a health professional involved in collecting bodies that 38 bodies already had been identified and taken by relations for burial.
"We have around 140 dead bodies brought from the mosque and more than 160 being treated for various injuries," the health professional said, asking not to be named because he was not authorized to speak on casualties.
"This is only for this hospital. Other corpses and wounded victims have been taken to Nassarawa Specialist Hospital," he said.
At Nassarawa Specialist Hospital, a rescue worker said the facility had received scores of injured and dead.
"We brought in more than 150 people injured in the attack at the mosque along with dozens of dead bodies," the rescue worker said.
Hundreds of relations have thronged the morgues and emergency units of the two hospitals to identify their dead relations and tend for those wounded, with doctors and nurses overstretched by the huge number of casualties.
At the Murtala Mohammed hospital, relatives were taking turns entering the morgue in groups to identify loved ones killed in the attacks, then to take bodies for burial after documentation by morgue attendants.
National police spokesman Emmanuel Ojukwu said the two bombers detonated explosives strapped to their bodies within short intervals while gunmen opened fire on worshipers who were trying to escape. At least three men, wearing explosives and armed with AK-47s, arrived in a Toyota Sienna van and opened fire on people fleeing the mosque, Kano Deputy Police Commissioner Sanusi N. Lemo told reporters.
An irate mob pursued the gunmen who had opened fire on worshipers, and people in the mob killed the gunmen, Ojukwu and witnesses said.
"The fact that the people pursued and killed the gunmen with bare hands shows the people have heeded to the call of the emir to fight back," said resident Sani Akarami.
The emir, who had urged resistance against Boko Haram, was not at the mosque when the attack took place. He is in Saudi Arabia on a pilgrimage, sources close to the emir said.
If Boko Haram is found to be responsible for these latest attacks it would be the second worst attack on Kano by the militants.
On January 20, 2012 at least 185 people were killed and scores injured in coordinated bomb and shooting attacks on security formations in the city by Boko Haram gunmen.
Kano is one of the areas where Boko Haram has fought an anti-government campaign to institute Sharia, or Islamic law. Attacks attributed to the group in Kano include a wave of bombings that killed 180 people in one day in 2012 and a suicide bombing that killed six people, including three police officers, at a gas station this month.
Boko Haram, which means "Western education is a sin," still is believed to be holding more than 200 girls it abducted in April from a school in Chibok, Borno state.
Also this month, Boko Haram's leader said the girls had been converted to Islam and married off, and he denied the government's claim that it had reached a ceasefire agreement with the group.
President Goodluck Jonathan extended his condolences to the victims of the mosque attack and directed officials to conduct a full-scale investigation, Nigerian state broadcaster NTA

Ebola test offering 15-minute results on trial in Guinea

A 15-minute blood and saliva test for Ebola is to be trialled in Guinea, it has been announced. The solar-powered, portable laboratory should deliver results six times faster than tests currently used in West Africa. The researchers involved say faster diagnosis would increase the chances of survival and reduce transmission of the virus. The trial will take place at an Ebola treatment centre in Conakry, Guinea. Ebola is currently diagnosed by hunting for the virus's genetic material in the blood of a patient. Continue reading the main story “Start Quote Researchers have considered how to make the test suitable for use in remote field hospitals, where resources are often in short supply” Dr Val Snewin Wellcome Trust But it requires dedicated laboratories that can keep the components of the test at very low temperatures. Patients in Conakry will still have the proven test, but the new faster method will be trialled at the same time so the results can be compared. Solar-powered The project, led by the Pasteur Institute in Dakar, Senegal, uses a 'mobile suitcase laboratory'. It is portable, solar-powered and can be used at room temperature. The project is being funded by the Wellcome Trust medical charity and the UK's Department for International Development. Dr Val Snewin, the international activities manager at the Wellcome Trust, said: "A reliable, 15-minute test that can confirm cases of Ebola would be a key tool for effective management of the Ebola outbreak - allowing patients to be identified, isolated and cared for as soon as possible. "It not only gives patients a better chance of survival, but it prevents transmission of the virus to other people. "This pilot study is particularly promising because researchers have considered how to make the test suitable for use in remote field hospitals, where resources - such as electricity and cold storage - are often in short supply." The UK's International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: "The UK is doing everything possible to help the government of Sierra Leone tackle and ultimately defeat Ebola. "Funding this groundbreaking research will develop new ways of diagnosing suspected cases even more quickly and stop more people suffering from this deadly virus."

MOTION CAPTURE SECRETS BEHIND 'PLANET OF THE APES'

The Art of Movement is a monthly show that highlights the most significant innovations in science and technology that are helping shape our modern world. (CNN) -- He's the face of motion-capture performance. Whether it's as the nefarious and rather grotesque "Gollum," Tintin's beloved best friend and sidekick, the grouchy "Captain Haddock," or more recently the intellectually enhanced chimp ringleader "Caesar" from the "Planet of the Apes" franchise, Andy Serkis is synonymous with the groundbreaking movie technique. Over the years countless fans and fellow actors -- including Serkis' "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" co-star James Franco -- have called for the motion-capture pioneer to receive an Oscar for bringing his characters to life. So far to no avail. Andy Serkis on acting 'Hobbit' stars weigh in on 3-D critics Online devotees argue that Serkis' Oscar "snubs" come from the fact that the Academy Awards judges are wary of motion-capture performances. Whether or not that is true, not many truly understand how the British actor and other "mo-cap" performers achieve such sincerely emotional portrayals of computer-generated protagonists. "I think our ability to have actors now on stage playing other creatures or on location on set has been fantastic both for the creatures they're portraying and, you know, perhaps the human characters they're playing off in the scene," explains Dan Barret, animation supervisor at Weta Digital, the New Zealand-based digital effects firm that worked on "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," "Tintin," "The Hobbit" and many other blockbusters. "It's improved performances and opened up a whole lot of opportunities as far as how much work we can get through, how much motion we can get," says Barret. "Generating all of this stuff with key frames can take a long time. It's been a huge revolution."

SONY PICTURES COMPUTER SYSTEM HACKED IN ONLINE ATTACK

Sony Pictures Entertainment has been targeted by computer hackers in an attack which reports say forced it shut down its systems on Monday.

A skull appeared on computer screens along with a message threatening to release data "secrets" if undisclosed demands were not met, reports said.
The message showed "#GOP" indicating a group called Guardians of Peace was behind the attack. Sony has issued a statement saying the firm is investigating the "IT matter".

The tech firm has reportedly shut down its computer network as a precaution and advised employees that resolving the situation could take anywhere from one day to three weeks.

Meanwhile, an anonymous user on the Reddit news website posted an image allegedly from a Sony computer screen, which said "Warning: We've already warned you, and this is just the beginning… We have obtained all your internal data including secrets and top secrets".

Sony under attack

News of the online attack comes just months after Sony's Playstation network was forced offline by a cyber attack in August. Wee Teck Loo, head of consumer electronics research at Euromonitor said any negative news for Sony just "piles" pressure on the company that has been struggling financially in both its TV and mobile business.

"Three years ago, the hack on PlayStation network was massive, expensive and absolutely embarrassing. This time round, I don't believe that there will be massive damage, save for Sony's ego, even if the hack is real," Mr Loo said.

Charles Lim, senior industry analyst at ICT, Frost & Sullivan Asia Pacific, however, said the attack has put into question what "multi-layers of prevention" Sony has to detect and handle such risks.

"In this breach, GOP claimed to have accessed private keys, source codes, password files and even their production schedule and notes, and that will raise questions," Mr Lim said.

High profile companies like Sony can be targeted and hacked every day, according consulting firm AT Kearney. In its latest research, the firm said that experts estimate that at least 25% of all companies have already suffered financial loss through some form of cyber attack.

Analysis: Richard Taylor, BBC North America Technology Correspondent.

Sony is understandably keen to downplay this latest hacking threat. "We are investigating the matter" is the kind of benign language more commonly used for routine technological issues, not chilling messages threatening to unleash reams of data to the world.

The demands are opaque so it is unclear how damage could be wrought should Sony fail to resolve the situation before the deadline. Sony Pictures has at least reclaimed its compromised Twitter accounts. Nevertheless, this internal corporate attack does not yet appear to be of the magnitude of previous public breaches that Sony has suffered.

But the fact that hackers have again apparently infiltrated Sony's systems will do nothing to restore public faith that the Japanese technology giant has its security affairs in order.

And it is somewhat ironic that Sony has only just dismissed the allegation made by hackers that they had succeeded in breaching the Playstation network earlier this year. This latest attack cannot be so easily dismissed.

CLEVELAND POLICE SHOOT DEAD BOY "12 age", CARRYING FAKE GUN

A 12-year-old boy has been shot dead by police in the US city of Cleveland, after brandishing what turned out to be a fake gun in a playground.

Police say an officer fired two shots at the boy after he failed to obey an order to raise his hands.

A caller reported the boy to police for scaring people with a gun but said that he did not know if it was real. One of the officers was in his first year on the local force, the other had more than 10 years of experience.

AIRSOFT

The medical examiner for Cuyahoga County identified the boy as Tamir Rice. Cleveland deputy police chief Ed Tomba said the boy was shot twice after pulling the gun from the waistband of his trousers.

He died later in hospital. The boy did not make any verbal threats nor point the gun towards the officers, Mr Tomba added.

Police said the weapon was an "airsoft" replica gun that resembled a semi-automatic pistol, adding that an orange safety indicator had been removed.

The caller said the boy was pulling the gun in and out of his trousers. "I don't know if it's real or not," the caller told police.

But Jeff Follmer, president of the Cleveland police association, said the two officers at the scene were not told about the caller's comments.

The BBC's David Willis in Washington says an investigation is under way and both officers have been placed on administrative leave.

He says there have already been calls for tighter controls on fake guns, with one local lawmaker - Alicia Reece - saying she intends to introduce legislation that would require fake guns sold in Ohio to be brightly coloured.

Cleveland's police force has come under increased scrutiny in recent years, most notably over a high-profile car chase in 2012 that ended with two deaths and officers firing 137 shots.

The US Justice Department is currently conducting an investigation of the force's pursuit and use-of-force practices.

BOMBER KILLS 45 AT AFGHAN VOLLEYBALL MATCH

A suicide bomber has killed at least 45 people at a volleyball tournament in eastern Afghanistan, officials say. A spokesman for the governor of Paktika province told the BBC that the attacker had detonated the bomb amid a crowd of people gathering for a game.

About 60 people were also wounded in the bombing in Yahyakhail district. It came after Afghan MPs approved security deals allowing Nato and US soldiers to remain after the withdrawal of most foreign troops next month.

The total number of soldiers in the new Nato force will be about 12,000. Their mission has been defined as training, advising and assisting the Afghan security forces.

There will also be a separate US-led force dealing with the remnants of al-Qaeda. It emerged on Saturday, however, that President Barack Obama has approved guidelines to allow US troops to fight the Taliban and provide air support for Afghan missions.

Sunday's bombing occurred when a crowd of people were preparing to watch the final of a regional volleyball tournament. All the casualties were civilians.

Provincial spokesman Mokhis Afghan said: "There were too many people gathered in the one place to watch the game. Dozens of others are wounded and we have reports that many of them are in critical condition."

The Taliban have stepped up attacks on both Western and Afghan targets across the country this year. The agreements with Nato and the US still need to be ratified by the Afghan upper house.

IRAN NUCLEAR TALKS ENTER FINAL DAYS BEFORE DEADLINE

Hardline anxiety over Rouhani grows more acute Pessimism pervades Iran nuclear deal talks Nuclear deal keeps Iran's floundering economy afloat Talks on Iran's nuclear programme are entering a crucial weekend in Vienna but there is no sign of a breakthrough as Monday's deadline looms.

The US admitted that "serious gaps do remain". But Secretary of State John Kerry did cancel plans to leave Austria, and held further talks with his Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif late on Friday.

Six world powers want Iran to curb its nuclear programme in return for the lifting of UN sanctions. The US, the UK, France, Germany, Russia and China want Iran to demonstrate it is not seeking to build nuclear weapons, in the face of protestations by Tehran that its programme is purely energy-related.

'No new ideas' "We are running against the clock," White House spokesman Eric Schultz was quoted as saying in Washington by the AFP news agency.

Potential deal-breakers International sanctions mean the motor works company Iran Khodro is trying to source all its spare parts locally Uranium enrichment:

Western states want to reduce Iran's capacity in order to prevent it acquiring weapons-grade material but Tehran is set on expanding it nearly 20-fold in the coming years Sanctions reduction.

Iran wants sanctions lifted immediately but Western states want to stagger their removal to ensure Tehran abides by its commitments Bomb technology.

Iran has failed to explain explosives tests and other activity that could be linked to a nuclear weapons programme and has denied international nuclear inspectors access to its Parchin military site "Obviously, the deadline is Monday, and our folks there (in Vienna) are working furiously to meet it.

Serious gaps do remain." After meeting Mr Kerry on Friday evening, Mr Zarif said he heard "no new ideas" and had received "no remarkable proposals to take to Tehran".

John Kerry had cancelled his plans to leave Vienna to hold further talks with the Iranian team The aim is to turn an interim accord reached with Tehran a year ago into a lasting agreement. Iran has been resisting efforts to scale back its nuclear programme for nearly a decade.

Separately, the international nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is calling on Iran to address its concerns about suspicious military activities that could be linked to a nuclear weapons programme.

Iran had promised to give the IAEA a response by late August to allegations concerning explosives tests and other activity but has failed to do so and has also denied access to a key military site, Parchin.

A senior Iranian official told the BBC the team was expecting to reach an outline of a deal by the deadline and then spend the following seven-to-10 days working on the implementation of it at expert level. UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond called on Iran to show "flexibility".

At the same time, he warned: "We have a long way to go if we are to get to a deal before the deadline." Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that "all the elements are already on the table" as long as there was "political will". The deal being sought by the world powers is not directly linked to the IAEA's investigation of Iran.

However, the US has said in the past that Iran must address the watchdog's concerns if it expects a comprehensive agreement in the talks.

IAEA chief Yukiya Amano said Iran had not "provided any explanations that enable the agency to clarify the outstanding practical measures".

'SOPHISTICATED' ANDROID MALWARE HITS PHONES

Android has become a popular target for malicious programs Hundreds of thousands of Android phones have been infected with malware that uses handsets to send spam and buy event tickets in bulk.

Mobile security firm Lookout said the virus, called NotCompatible, was the most sophisticated it had seen. The cyberthieves behind it had recently rewritten its core code to make it harder to defeat, it said.

Mobile malware aimed at smartphones is steadily getting more complex, said security company Wandera. Jeremy Linden, a security analyst at Lookout, said: "The group behind NotCompatible are operating on a different plane to the typical mobile malware maker."

VICTIMS FOR RENT

Usually, he said, mobile malware campaigns lasted only a couple of weeks but the NotCompatible creators had been operating for more than two years.

The bug first appeared in 2012 and was now on its third iteration, he said, adding that the latest version had been rewritten recently and was now as sophisticated as the malware aimed at desktop computers.

"They are successful enough to make it worth ripping out the back end of the malware to make it be much more stable and resistant to efforts to take it down," he said.

This latest version employed end-to-end encryption, peer-to-peer networking technologies and stealthy operating procedures to help it avoid being spotted and removed, he said.

Apple devices have been targeted with malware that seeks to steal data from handsets Phones infected with NotCompatible were enrolled into a network that is now being rented out to any crime group that needs a ready source of Android users.

Mr Linden said compromised phones had been used in a variety of scams including sending spam, attacking Wordpress blogs and buying tickets for popular events in bulk that would then be resold at a significant profit. "This is the most technically sophisticated threat we are facing and it's the most worrying to us," said Mr Linden.

NotCompatible is being spread via spam and websites seeded with booby-trapped downloads, he said and urged Android users to be wary of any app that required a security update to be installed before it was run.

GROWING CONFIDENCE

Mobile malware was growing in popularity among cybercrime groups because smartphones were now so central to modern life, said Eldar Tuvey from mobile security monitoring firm Wandera "We're definitely seeing the bad guys focus their attention on mobiles," he said.

"That's because more time is now spent on apps on phones than desktops." While Android had long been a target of malware makers, the appearance of the Wirelurker and Masque malware families that both targeted Apple gadgets showed the growing confidence of cybercriminals, he said.

They were keen to get a foothold on a phone so they could harvest useful data that they could sell or use to make phishing emails look more plausible, or to lever open accounts for social networks or other web-based services.

With 70% of people reusing passwords across many different sites and services, it was no surprise that criminals regularly got access to these accounts, he said.

Many were aided by "leaky" apps that passed around log-in names, email addresses and other credentials in unencrypted text, said Mr Tuvey. "The trend is only moving in one direction," he said.

"The criminals are sharing information between themselves and they are learning about how to improve the efficiency of their attacks."

EBOLA OUTBREAK CAN BE ENDED IN 2015, BAN KI-MOON SAYS

The deadly Ebola outbreak can be ended "by the middle of next year" if the world speeds up its response, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said.

But he warned that although the rate of new cases was slowing in parts of West Africa, Mali - where six people have died - was now of deep concern.

And the head of the UN Ebola mission, Anthony Banbury, said the world was "far away" from beating the virus. Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have been worst hit by the Ebola outbreak.

More than 5,400 people have died in those three countries, along with a handful of others in Nigeria, Mali, Spain and the US.

In a separate development, Liberian police said all the country's beaches would be closed from 29 November until Liberia was declared free of Ebola.

In a statement, the police said anyone using the beach in violation of the order would be prosecuted.

TASK FORCE

Speaking at a meeting in Washington with officials from the World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mr Ban said: "If we continue to accelerate our response, we can contain and end the outbreak by the middle of next year."

Nearly 500 people are currently under surveillance in Mali, the authorities there say He said that so far results in the international effort to tackle Ebola remained uneven, stressing that many more health workers were needed in the worst-hit countries in West Africa.

"Our end game is not near. We must get to zero cases. Ebola is not a disease where you can leave a few cases and say you've done enough."

Mr Ban said the situation in Mali was of particular concern. WHO chief Margaret Chan is to travel to Mali later on Saturday, and the UN has already announced a special taskforce for the country to deal with the outbreak.

Mr Banbury, the head of the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (Unmeer), warned that "we are far, far away from ending this crisis".
"There is a long battle ahead of us," he added.

UNDER SURVEILLANCE

The UN's comments came as a doctor in Mali died after treating a patient who had sparked a second Ebola wave in the country.

The doctor, whose name has not been released, had worked in a clinic in the capital Bamako where an Islamic preacher from Guinea was admitted last month.

Preacher Oussa Koita was initially diagnosed with a kidney problem and has since died, along with another health worker.

A two-year-old girl also died from Ebola in Mali last month in a separate case, which did not lead to any further infections.

Nearly 500 people are currently under surveillance in Mali, the authorities there say. Ebola is spread only through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person showing symptoms, such as fever or vomiting.

People caring for the sick or handling the bodies of people infected Ebola are therefore especially vulnerable.

ANDROID LOLLIPOP UPDATE CAUSES PROBLEMS

Android Lollipop update causes problems

Adobe Air-based apps being wiped from their handsets Early adopters of Google's latest Android operating system are warning others of problems with the software.

Issues include the update causing Nexus 7 tablets to run slowly and repeatedly crash, with several users complaining they had become "unusable".

The code also appears to remove apps built with Adobe Air and then prevent them from being reinstalled. Adobe said it had not been aware of this "critical" bug before Tuesday and had escalated it with Google.

A spokesman for the search firm was unable to comment at this time. 'Shockingly bad' Android 5.0 - also known as Lollipop - is described as a "quantum leap forward" by Google and has attracted several positive reviews, fuelling desire for the software.

It revamps the system's user interface, offers greater control over notifications, and makes changes to the way the OS executes code, which Google said should mean fewer "temporary glitches" than before.

At the moment, it is only available to a limited number of machines, because many network operators and device manufacturers have yet to complete their own tests.

However, owners of Nexus-branded machines - which are sold by Google itself - can install the software by downloading it from the firm's website or, in the case of the Asus-made Nexus 7, accepting an over-the-air update.

Android Lollipop adapts its look to suit smartwatches, smartphones and tablets Nvidia, LG and Motorola have also released Android Lollipop updates for some of their handsets and tablets.

Dozens of messages posted to Google's own forums suggest that owners of the 2012 version of the Nexus 7, in particular, are experiencing headaches. "Some apps won't work and some crash.

I wish I didn't install the update," wrote Kristen Sawyer. Another user, nicknamed StretchToo said: "Chrome is dead, unusable, Firefox just about works, the keyboard takes over a minute to load, nearly works if you hunt and peck but dies if you try to swipe."

Android 5.0 was released to the public earlier this month Some tablet owners have, however, suggested potential solutions to such problems. "Updated and the Nexus is [so] shockingly bad it is basically unusable, lags just rotating the screen, every task takes 10 seconds to perform if it does it [at all]," wrote Gary Looker.

"I've turned off Google Now, changed transitions to zero and limited it to two background apps maximum like the good people here suggested. "I shouldn't have to do that, and many people won't know where to turn or who to listen to." ESCALATING THE ISSUES Several Android Lollipop users have also highlighted compatibility problems with Air-based apps.

Users say Android Lollipop refuses to reinstall some wiped Adobe Air-based apps Air allows developers to use Adobe's Flash and Dreamweaver tools to create software, and is particularly popular with indie video game makers.

Examples of titles that use the tech include Machinarium, Hero Mages and Empire Four Kingdoms, while non-gaming examples include Instaweather Pro and Conqu.

"We were previously unaware of this bug and contrary to other reports, were not working with Google on a fix," wrote Adobe product manager Chris Campbell in response.

"However, we are working with Google on another self-signed certificate issue that is impacting in-app purchases. It's possible the two are related, but we do not have enough information at this time to determine one way or the other.

"That said, we'll be escalating this issue with Google immediately." Reports elsewhere suggest some users are experiencing problems with text messages, the way contacts are managed, and wi-fi connectivity.

'Best to wait' Bugs in major software updates are not uncommon. Apple apologised in September after faults with iOS 8 caused some of its new iPhones to be unable to make and receive calls, and also restricted their Touch ID functionality.

Apple experienced problems of its own following the release of iOS 8 One expert said in general, there were benefits to waiting a few days after a release date before installing upgrades.

"With any software update it makes sense to watch and see if there are any teething problems," said Ian Fogg, from the IHS Technology consultancy. "Consumers like it and benefit when their devices gain a new lease of life with new features - but they expect what they used to use to continue to work, and that can be tricky.

"What's striking about Android Lollipop is that it's reaching devices from more manufacturers, more more quickly than previous versions of Android. "Motorola, LG and Nvidia have devices receiving Lollipop almost at the same time as Nexus devices.

"That has benefits to consumers who get it quicker... but of course makes it more complex for Google, which has to manage problems across a wider range of phones and tablets early on."

NOKIA N1 ANDROID TABLET CAUSES A SURPRISE

The Nokia N1 features a customised version of Android developed by the Finnish firm Nokia is launching an Android-powered tablet, marking the Finnish company's return to consumer electronics.

The surprise launch pits the firm against Microsoft, which completed its takeover of Nokia's previous mobile-devices business in April. The N1 tablet is due to go on sale in China towards the start of 2015, ahead of other countries.

Nokia said it was not making the device itself, but had licensed its brand, design and software to a third-party. Taiwanese manufacture Foxconn is the licensee.

"This is a great product for Nokia fans and everyone who has not found the right Android tablet yet," said Sebastian Nystrom, head of products at Nokia Technologies, who announced the product at the Slush technology conference in Helsinki.

One company watcher was startled by the move. "I'm surprised how quickly Nokia has decided to do this. But equally if Nokia was going to do anything with its brand, it was going to have to do it quickly," said Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight.

Microsoft still sells the Nokia-branded Lumia 2520 tablet "The brand has been in a consistent state of freefall over the past three years, so if they are going to extract any value from it they needed to do it sooner than later."

Microsoft sells Nokia-labelled kit of its own, including the Lumia 2520 Windows RT-powered tablet. Earlier this month, it unveiled its first Lumia smartphone without the Nokia name.

But it indicated that it would continue using the brand on its less powerful "feature phone" line-up, saying it had the right to do so for up to a decade under the terms of its $7.2bn (£4.6bn) takeover. It is not clear whether Nokia's announcement affects those plans.

"There's no question Microsoft will not be a little frustrated that at a time when it's trying to defocus the Nokia brand, here is something that resurrects it prematurely," said Mr Wood. "In some respects it will also cause a bit of confusion." The only comment from Microsoft was a brief statement: "This is a Nokia announcement and is not associated in any way with Microsoft."

ANDROID SKIN

The N1 is a 7.9in (20.1cm) aluminium-framed tablet, whose design resembles the iPad Mini. Unlike Apple's device, however, it is powered by Google's Android 5.0 operating system, features an Intel Atom processor and has a Micro-USB slot.

The planned retail price is $249 (£159). The N1 features a 64-bit Intel quad-core Atom processor and an aluminium shell It runs Nokia's own Z Launcher user interface - known as a skin - on top of Android.

The previously announced software allows owners to draw letters on the tablet's screen with one of their fingers to search for related content and changes the apps presented on the machine's home screen according to the time of day and the device's location.

"For Nokia, the advantages of licensing are considerable. Nokia can enter the mobile device market without needing to worry about manufacturing, supply chain management, stock control or hardware distribution," said Ian Fogg, director of mobile analysis at research firm IHS Technology.

But, he noted, previous partnerships had not lived to expectation. "The Symbian venture over a smartphone OS ran into the ground amid bureaucracy and differing partner visions," he said.

"Nokia failed to establish successful licensing of its Series 60 software. The Intel partnership with Meego [an operating system] was aborted after just one year in as Nokia switched to Microsoft.

"And, Nokia has only just extricated itself from the choice of Windows Phone. Nokia must execute much better with licensing and mobile devices this time if it is to succeed."

Nokia reported a return to health in October after it posted a third-quarter net profit of 747m euros ($935m; £597m) thanks to the work of its network equipment, mapping and software divisions, which had previously been weighed down by its loss-making hardware business.

WHY SEALS HAVING SEX WITH PENGUINS?

Seals discovered having sex with penguins

Things are heating up in the cold climes of the sub-Antarctic. On a remote, and mostly desolate island, seals have been caught engaging in an extreme form of sexual behaviour. Specifically, they have been trying to have sex with penguins. More than one fur seal has been caught in the act, on more than one occasion.

And it’s all been captured on film, with details being published in the journal Polar Biology. Perhaps it is a release of sexual frustration The sexual behaviour of the fur seals hasn’t come as a complete shock to the scientists that recorded it.

In 2006, they saw, for the first time, a fur seal attempting to copulate with a king penguin, on Marion Island, a sub-Antarctic island that is home to both species.

They published details of that incident, and speculated that the sex act at the time may have been the behavior of a frustrated, sexually inexperienced seal. Or an aggressive, predatory act. Or a playful one that turned sexual.

But the new incidents, published in the study "Multiple occurrences of king penguin (Aptenodytes patagonicus) sexual harassment by Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella)", still surprised the researchers.

“Honestly I did not expect that follow up sightings of a similar nature to that 2006 one would ever be made again, and certainly not on multiple occasions,” said Nico de Bruyn, of the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. Scientists routinely monitor wildlife on the island, and look out for rare and unusual behaviour.

On three separate occasions, a research team led by William A. Haddad and de Bruyn spotted young male seals sexually coercing what appeared to be healthy penguins of unknown gender.

Two incidents occurred on Goodhope Bay, and one on Funk beach. The incident in 2006 occurred on a different beach again, called Trypot. “This really made us sit up and take notice,” said de Bruyn, of the new sightings.

All four known sexual incidents followed a common pattern. Each time a seal chased, captured and mounted the penguin. The seal then attempted copulation several times, lasting about five minutes each, with periods of rest in between.

I genuinely think the behaviour is increasing in frequency Male and female penguins mate via an opening called a cloaca, and the seals are thought to have actually penetrated the penguins in some of the acts, which were caught on film by Haddad.

In three of the four recorded incidents the seal let the penguin go. But on one of the more recent occasions, the seal killed and ate the penguin after trying to mate with it. Fur seals often catch and eat penguins on the island.

The incidents are the only time pinnipeds, the group that includes seals, fur seals and sea-lions, have been known to have sex with a animal from a different biological class, in this case a mammal trying to have sex with a bird.

The scientists can only speculate about why the seals are behaving this way. But the new observations suggest that having sex with penguins may be becoming a learned behaviour among seals on the island.

“Seals have capacity for learning - we know this from their foraging behaviour for example,” explained de Bruyn. So male seals may see each other coercing penguins, then attempt it themselves.

That might explain why the number of incidents appears to be increasing. “I genuinely think the behaviour is increasing in frequency.” But “if this is learned behaviour, we really can’t think of what the reward may be for these young males,” he adds.

“Other than perhaps learning that these birds are an easier target to practice their copulatory skills.” The seals were not yet old or large enough to defend harems of female seals, explained de Bruyn.

“Perhaps it is a release of sexual frustration, given the hormonal surges during seal breeding season. It is very unlikely to be failed mate recognition - i.e. the misidentification of the penguin as a female seal.

“All in all it’s difficult to say really,” he admits.

IPHONE Vs ANDROID WHICH IS BETTER? SEE IN

iPhone vs. Android: Which is better?
Enough talk. We compared how Android and the iPhone perform 15 basic tasks.

See for yourself how they rank.

      1)Login (see picture 1)

The iPhone’s TouchID fingerprint sensor makes bypassing the annoying lock screen a breeze. Samsung has a similar feature. Other Android phones have a face recognition login option, which is less secure and doesn’t work in dimly lit settings.

      2)Make a call (see picture number 2)

Favorite contacts are laid out much better in Android — according to the people you call most frequently. But FaceTime is the iPhone’s killer feature.

3)Check the time (see picture number 3)

The iPhone shows you the time when you press the home or lock button. But Android does time keeping better. Motorola, Samsung and HTC have smart covers and sensors that automatically show you the time as soon as you pull the phone out of your pocket. Android also has a super-dim “daydream” clock that stays on when charging on your nightstand.

4)Take a photo or video (see picture number 4)

There are awesome Android cameras, and Android utilizes the full screen for the viewer, but the iPhone’s camera is definitely the best. Yet managing photos is a much better – and cheaper – experience on Android. And Apple’s iCloud is a disaster.

      5)Type (see picture number 5)

Android’s stock keyboard is better than Apple’s, including its swipe gestures. It also has punctuation on the same screen as the letters. (Really, Apple, can’t you do that?) Both now have third-party keyboards if you’re looking for an option that better suits your needs.

6)Use apps (see picture number 6)

Apple and Google both have fantastic app stores. But Android is far superior at organizing apps, letting you put important stuff on the home screens and hide less useful apps in the app drawer. Unlike Android, the iPhone’s apps look like a mess when they’re placed into folders. Also, Android’s widgets are much more useful than Apple’s.

7)Get and Manage Notifications (see picture number 7)

The iPhone’s active notifications let you respond from within the notification without opening the app – something Android lacks. But Android still makes notifications easier to use because you can swipe to clear them. Deleting notifications on iOS 8 is a pain in the neck. And Android’s killer app, Google Now, magically notifies you when you need to leave for your next appointment.

8)Listen to music and podcasts (see picture number 8)

Android has an excellent music-playing app in Google Play Music. But Apple has iTunes. Enough said.

9)Check email (see picture number 9)

Apple automatically recognizes your Exchange settings for work email. Android’s mail app isn’t as pretty and lacks some of the controls that the iPhone gives you. Though Android lets you quickly swipe to the next message, it doesn’t thread conversations like the iPhone.

10)Get directions (see picture number 10)

Google Maps is the best mobile app ever designed. It’s available on both the iPhone and Android, but it’s only used natively on Android. That means Siri can’t use Google Maps – only Apple’s improving but still inferior Maps app.

      11)Contacts (see picture number 11)

Android’s contacts are much easier to navigate, and its large photos make it easier to find who you’re looking for. The iPhone automatically connects with Facebook and other social networks to populate your contacts’ photos. Most Android phones require a separate app, like Sync.Me, to do that.

      12)Search (see picture number 12)

Search is Google’s bread and butter, but Apple did a surprisingly good job updating Spotlight search in iOS 8. Spotlight searches more stuff than Google does: email, podcasts, notes, reminders, calendar events, texts and voice memos. But Google lets you choose your default search engine. With Apple, you’re stuck with Bing.

13)Set to vibrate (see picture number 13)

The iPhone has a physical switch. On Android, you have to turn on the phone, then hold down the power button.

14)Talk to your phone (see picture number 14)

Siri has personality, but she doesn’t really do much. Android’s voice “assistant” has no personality – and it also doesn’t do much of anything. But Android’s voice assistant types as you talk, works offline and can be activated hands-free by saying “OK Google.”

15)Use flashlight (see picture number 15)

Apple has a built-in flashlight, activated with a swipe up from the bottom of the screen. In Android, you have to download an app, most of which require way too many permissions.
